Detailed description

SUMMARY

The Workshop instills the collaborative essence of Project Management, an outcome often not achieved in university or college courses. Through intensive exercises, you will be equipped to plan a project step by step, with attention to the requirements for monitoring, control and completion.

From these practical sessions, the myriad Project Management methodologies and training options are then contextually unravelled, placing you in a position to take an informed decision about the next steps in your own development. The relative importance of specific certifications (such as PMP®, PRINCE2® or NQF certifications) then also come to light.

CERTIFICATE

There is no exam at the end of the Workshop, but with your full involvement, you will receive a Certificate of Active Participation from ProjectManagement.co.za.

If you decide to later join the Integrated Certification Programme in Project Management, participation in the Workshop will mean that you have already completed the first module. International certification exams are taken at the end of Modules 3 and 4.

Mariné Pienaar provides inputs for the project while her team carry out the planning.
Participants plan an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) under the leadership of an environmental consultant in their team.

Project Management training for the private sector and public sector
A group of participants from the private sector and donor-funded agencies plan a public awareness project.

CONTENT

Project Management is first and foremost about effective management, and secondly about the tools and techniques pertaining to projects. Whilst addressing specific considerations for effective management, the Workshop recognises that inspiring leadership and good administration are relevant to other spheres of management as well, and thus focuses primarily on tools and techniques for the planning and execution of projects.

The Workshop therefore concentrates on:

  • the project lifecycle;
  • project authority structures;
  • time, cost, and scope management and the management of risk;
  • stakeholders and communications; and
  • configuration management.
Amongst other techniques, reference is made to:
  • product-based planning,
  • the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure),
  • Gantt charts,
  • activity sequencing with an overview of the CPM (Critical Path Method), and
  • activity-based costing.
Exercises and group activities will help you to learn the principles, methods and techniques quickly. In addition to this practical training, you are also introduced to:
  • Project Management as a tool for effectiveness in any field,
  • special considerations for formally implementing Project Managment in an organisation, and
  • career paths to becoming a professional Project Manager.
The Workshop includes a brief demonstration of Project Management software (PSNext, Microsoft Office Project and MMPM). The relevance of affiliate bodies, methodologies and certifications such as those of the PMI® (PMBoK®, PMP®, CAPM®), APMG (PRINCE2® Foundation & Practitioner), SAQA (NQF), GAPPS and Agile will also be explained.
